1. Choir Of Young Believers - Hollow Talk.
AKA, the theme tune to the excellent Danish/Swedish drama The Bridge. The second series of which has only just ended on BBC 4. Aside from having an excellent story line, this was a series in which the dynamic between the two main characters was as gripping as the action. The theme tune is from a very successful and popular Danish band who have had many number 1 hits over there. This song is very mellow and atmospheric and perfectly fits the program.
2. Mogwai - Hungry Face
AKA, that theme tune from the excellent french series that aired on channel 4 last year, The Returned. As with all the music from the series this is performed by the Glasgwegian band Mogwai. A band i failed to really get into in the past. On the release of this album though i discovered a subtlety that i felt had been missing in previous records and that sought me to re-evaluate their past records and i'm now a certified fan of their music.
3. Manic Street Preachers - Theme From M*A*S*H
I love the Manics and this 1992 reworking of the Theme From M*A*S*H (Suicide is Painless) is one of the first songs i ever heard them do. It was recorded as part of an album put together by the NME to celebrate 40 years of the charts, where bands covered their favourite number 1 singles of the past 40 years.
4. Ac/Dc - If You Want Blood(You Got It)
Empire Records is one of my favourite films of all time. Its one of those great movies you can just put on any time you want to be entertained for 90 minutes, and who wouldn't want to work in a record shop like that. This is from one of my favourite scenes, where the shop manager takes his anger at Lucas (who gambled away the takings the previous night) out on his drums as he drums along to this.
5. The Clash - Armagideon Time
Of all the ways to discover one of the classic bands that become one of your favourite bands, that last you'd expect is through a late 90's film soundtrack for a rom com about a assassin going to his school reunion. That's exactly how i got into The Clash. Joe Strummer helped curate the soundtrack for one of my guilty pleasure films Grosse Pointe Blank and through that i discovered that The Clash were not just another punk band but a band that embraced influences from all over.
6. Belle and Sebastian - Night Walk
They are my favourite band, and the did a soundtrack so i had to choose something from it and this atmospheric instrumental track i find to be great headphone music. What was the film - Storytelling, it contained three stories in one film that seemed to have real point and wasn't that great. ho hum.
7. Grandaddy - AM 180
AKA, the theme to Charlie Brookers Screen wipe - an excellent program and an excellent theme from an excellent American band.
8. New Order - Turn My Way
One of the few highlights from one of New Orders last few albums. It formed the theme to a BBC 3 drama called Burn It. This was terrible in series 1 - it tried to make an actress out of Mel B. I think that tells you all you need to know. However, i got hooked on series 2 and have tried in vein to find it on dvd since. This is probably a good thing as it probably wasn't as good as i remember and was only enjoyed because of the time of life i was in.
9. Yann Tiersen - Sur Le Fil
Taken from the soundtrack to Les Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain. A film that i love to bits, as i do all the works of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Having seen Yann Tiersen live a few years ago, i can testify to how impressive it is to see him perform this tune and wreck his violin to pieces.
10. Beastie Boys - Sabotage
Not strictly film or tv. Its the theme to the excellent radio 5 show Fighting Talk. I've been listening to this on podcast for 3 years now and it never fails to entertain.
11. The Fall - Theme From Sparta FC
The Fall are great and this tune has been used down south for many years as the theme to Final Score - beats thon Sportscene tune anyday - no?
